What we do to understand our visitors
For analytics we use Plausible Analytics, a privacy-focused service that does not use cookies, does not track users across websites, and is GDPR compliant. Plausible processes this data as our processor and hosts all data on European servers.
Legal basis: Legitimate interest (improving our website)
Data collected by Plausible: Page URLs visited, referrer sources, browser type and version, operating system, device type (desktop/mobile/tablet), and general location (country, region, city level only)
What Plausible does NOT collect: IP addresses (immediately discarded after processing), personal identifiers, cookies, or any data that can identify individual visitors
Unique visitor counting: Uses a daily-changing hashed identifier that cannot be traced back to individuals
Retention: Analytics data retained indefinitely for historical comparison, but daily visitor identifiers reset every 24 hours
What we do to protect our infrastructure, our services and our visitors
For infrastructure protection, we may log and analyze the IP addresses and browser agent strings of our visitors.
Legal basis: Legitimate interest (preventing abuse, monitoring infrastructure)
Data collected: IP addresses, browser information
Retention: 90 days
ClimateChangeTracker.org is hosted in data centers in the 🇪🇺 European Union.
Individual settings
When you use settings like theme switch or temperature unit switch or chart options like years, these settings are stored as tiny universal strings in the browser's local storage. We do not store any trackable identifiers on your device.
Legal basis: Legitimate interest (providing personalized experience)
Data: Non-personal preference settings
Storage: Your device only, no server storage
Embedding
Our embedding widgets are provided through our own CDN, which respects user privacy to the highest standards. Embedded charts do not set cookies. User settings are not persistent and do not use browser's local storage.
Feedback
When you submit feedback through our feedback form, we collect your message and selected topic to help us improve our service. Email address is optional and only collected if you provide it.
Legal basis: Legitimate interest (improving our service, preventing spam and abuse)
Data collected: Feedback text, topic selection, email address (if provided), technical identifiers to prevent spam
Retention: 12 months or until resolved
