Key Messages

• Emissions: China emitted around 14,600 megatonnes CO₂e in 2024, 25.6% of the global total.
• Per person: Emissions were around 10.3 tonnes per person per year, rated extremely high on a scale where any level above zero adds warming.
• Trend: Emissions rose by around 337 megatonnes CO₂e a year, or 2.59% yearly, over the ten years to 2024, rather than the 4% yearly decline the world needs to limit warming to around 1.7 °C.
• What drives it: CO₂ made up 82.4% of emissions, methane 10.42%, F-gases 3.92% and nitrous oxide 3.25%.
• Historic responsibility: Since 1851, China's emissions have produced around 512,000 megatonnes CO₂e of warming impact, 13.09% of the global total, or around 4.2 tonnes per person per year, rated moderate.
