Key Messages

• Emissions: The Russian Federation emitted around 2,770 megatonnes CO₂e in 2024, about 4.9% of the global total.
• Per person: Emissions were around 19.1 tonnes per person per year in 2024, rated extremely high on a scale where any level above zero adds warming.
• Trend: Emissions rose by around 18 megatonnes CO₂e a year over the ten years to 2024, rather than the 4% yearly decline the world as a whole needs to achieve Net Zero in 2050 and limit warming to around 1.7 °C.
• What drives it: CO₂ accounted for 78% of emissions, methane 16%, nitrous oxide 3.1% and F-gases 2.5%.
• Historic responsibility: Since 1851, the Russian Federation's emissions have produced around 271,000 megatonnes CO₂e of warming impact, about 6.9% of the global total, or around 16 tonnes per person per year.
