Key Messages

• Emissions: Iran emitted around 1,030 megatonnes CO₂e in 2024, about 1.8% of the global total.
• Per person: Emissions were around 11.2 tonnes per person per year, rated extremely high on a scale where any level above zero adds warming.
• Trend: Emissions rose by around 25.2 megatonnes CO₂e a year, or 2.73%, over the ten years to 2024, rather than the 4% yearly decline the world needs to achieve Net Zero in 2050 and limit warming to around 1.7 °C.
• What drives it: CO₂ makes up around 79% of emissions, methane 15.8%, nitrous oxide 3.12% and F-gases 2.26%.
• Historic responsibility: Since 1851, Iran's emissions have produced around 40,400 megatonnes CO₂e of warming impact, about 1.03% of the global total, averaging around 8.3 tonnes per person per year.
