Key Messages

• Emissions: Japan emitted around 1,030 megatonnes CO₂e in 2024, about 1.8% of the global total.
• Per person: Emissions were around 8.3 tonnes per person per year, rated very high on a scale where any level above zero adds warming.
• Trend: Emissions fell by around 2.46% a year over the ten years to 2024, slower than the 4% yearly decline the world needs to achieve Net Zero in 2050 and limit warming to around 1.7 °C.
• What drives it: CO₂ made up around 93% of emissions, methane 2.75%, F-gases 2.56% and nitrous oxide 1.74%.
• Historic responsibility: Since 1851, Japan's emissions have produced around 82,100 megatonnes CO₂e of warming impact, about 2.1% of the global total, or around 6.1 tonnes per person per year.
