Key Messages

• Emissions: In 2024, New Zealand emitted around 84 megatonnes CO₂e, about 0.15% of the global total.
• Per person: This was around 16.1 tonnes per person per year, rated extremely high on a scale where any level above zero adds warming.
• Trend: Emissions fell by around 0.87 megatonnes CO₂e a year, or 0.96% a year, over the ten years to 2024-slower than the 4% yearly global decline needed for Net Zero in 2050.
• What drives it: Methane makes up 41.5% of emissions, CO₂ 40.6%, nitrous oxide 15.8% and F-gases 2.2%.
• Historic responsibility: Since 1851, New Zealand's emissions have produced around 11,200 megatonnes CO₂e of warming impact, about 0.29% of the global total, or around 32.5 tonnes per person per year as a population-weighted average.
