Key Messages

• Emissions: Sri Lanka emitted around 43.1 megatonnes CO₂e in 2024, about 0.08% of the global total.
• Per person: Emissions were around 1.9 tonnes per person per year in 2024, rated low on a scale where any level above zero adds warming.
• Trend: Emissions fell by around 1.55% a year over the ten years to 2024, slower than the 4% yearly decline the world as a whole needs to achieve Net Zero in 2050 and limit warming to around 1.7 °C.
• What drives it: CO₂ made up around 69% of emissions, methane 25%, nitrous oxide 4.7% and F-gases 1.5%.
• Historic responsibility: Since 1851, Sri Lanka's emissions have produced around 4,060 megatonnes CO₂e of warming impact, about 0.1% of the global total, averaging around 2.5 tonnes per person per year, rated moderate.
