Key Messages

• Emissions: In 2024, Uruguay emitted around 43.5 megatonnes CO₂e, accounting for 0.08% of the global total.
• Per person: Emissions were around 12.8 tonnes per person per year, rated extremely high on a scale where any level above zero adds warming.
• Trend: Emissions declined by around 1.04% a year over the ten years to 2024, slower than the 4% yearly decline the world as a whole needs to achieve Net Zero in 2050 and limit warming to around 1.7 °C.
• What drives it: Methane made up around 58% of emissions, CO₂ 24%, nitrous oxide 17% and F-gases 0.57%.
• Historic responsibility: Since 1851, Uruguay's emissions have produced around 5,160 megatonnes CO₂e of warming impact, 0.13% of the global total, or around 16 tonnes per person per year.
