Key Messages

• Emissions: In 2024, Viet Nam emitted around 595 megatonnes CO₂e, about 1.04% of the global total.
• Per person: Emissions were around 5.9 tonnes per person per year, rated high on a scale where any level above zero adds warming.
• Trend: Emissions rose by around 1.9% a year over the ten years to 2024, rather than the 4% yearly decline the world needs to achieve Net Zero in 2050 and limit warming to around 1.7 °C.
• What drives it: CO₂ accounts for around 77% of emissions, methane 15.7%, nitrous oxide 5.1% and F-gases 2.1%.
• Historic responsibility: Since 1851, Viet Nam's emissions have produced around 26,300 megatonnes CO₂e of warming impact, about 0.67% of the global total. This was a population-weighted average of around 4.3 tonnes per person per year, rated moderate.
