Key Messages

• Emissions: Belgium emitted around 110 megatonnes CO₂e in 2024, about 0.19% of the global total.
• Per person: Emissions were around 9.4 tonnes per person per year, rated very high on a scale where any level above zero adds warming.
• Trend: Emissions fell by around 1.9% a year over the ten years to 2024, slower than the 4% yearly decline the world needs to achieve Net Zero in 2050 and limit warming to around 1.7 °C.
• What drives it: CO₂ made up around 80% of emissions, methane 11%, nitrous oxide 7.6% and F-gases 2%.
• Historic responsibility: Since 1851, Belgium's emissions have produced around 15,800 megatonnes CO₂e of warming impact, about 0.4% of the global total, or around 11.2 tonnes per person per year, rated extremely high.
