Key Messages

• Emissions: In 2024, Libya emitted around 100 megatonnes CO₂e, about 0.17% of the global total.
• Per person: In 2024, Libya emitted around 13.5 tonnes per person per year, rated extremely high on a scale where any level above zero adds warming.
• Trend: Emissions rose by around 1.8 megatonnes CO₂e a year over the ten years to 2024, rather than the 4% yearly decline the world as a whole needs to achieve Net Zero in 2050 and limit warming to around 1.7 °C.
• What drives it: CO₂ made up 65% of emissions, methane 27%, F-gases 6.3% and nitrous oxide 1.9%.
• Historic responsibility: Since 1851, Libya's emissions have produced around 5,800 megatonnes CO₂e of warming impact, about 0.15% of the global total, or around 16.2 tonnes per person per year.
