Key Messages

• Emissions: Zambia emitted around 98.9 megatonnes CO₂e in 2024, about 0.17% of the global total.
• Per person: Emissions were around 4.6 tonnes per person per year in 2024, rated moderate on a scale where any level above zero adds warming.
• Trend: Emissions declined by around 0.41% a year over the ten years to 2024, much slower than the 4% yearly decline the world as a whole needs to achieve Net Zero in 2050 and limit warming to around 1.7 °C.
• What drives it: CO₂ made up around 64% of emissions, methane 21%, nitrous oxide 14% and F-gases 0%.
• Historic responsibility: Since 1851, Zambia's emissions have produced around 7,560 megatonnes CO₂e of warming impact, about 0.19% of the global total, or around 9.3 tonnes per person per year population-weighted across the period.
