Key Messages

• Emissions: Iraq emitted around 394 megatonnes CO₂e in 2024, about 0.69% of the global total.
• Per person: Emissions were around 8.6 tonnes per person per year, rated very high on a scale where any level above zero adds warming.
• Trend: Emissions rose by around 10.7 megatonnes CO₂e a year, or 3.07% yearly, over the ten years to 2024, rather than the 4% yearly decline the world needs to achieve Net Zero in 2050 and limit warming to around 1.7 °C.
• What drives it: CO₂ makes up around 60% of emissions, methane 37%, nitrous oxide 1.8% and F-gases 1.4%.
• Historic responsibility: Since 1851, Iraq's emissions have produced around 18,500 megatonnes CO₂e of warming impact, about 0.47% of the global total, averaging around 10.7 tonnes per person per year and rated extremely high.
